My Name is Octavia Hooks
My natural hair experience began after reading "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" as told to Alex Haley. The book inspired me to embrace who I was, appreciate how I look while feeling empowered to actualize my dreams. I began wearing my hair in braid styles to express my cultural heritage.
For 10 years I wore sculpted braids and twists and found it thrilling to wear my hair in such expressive natural hairstyles. Conversely, I hated the three day "takedown" process. I would wear hats and scarves to conceal my undone appearance. Oh, I hated the take down process until one day it hit me; I decided to change my look.
Regrettably I permed over ten years of natural hair growth. My newly relaxed hair was long, healthy, and it flowed like never before. But after 6 months my hair began to break off and came out in clumps with a simple touch. I opted for a comb twist hairstyle, complete with a tapered fade to the back of my neck.
During this time I received tickets to an Alvin Ailey theater performance which sparked within me the same feelings as the Malcolm X biography from years previous. That very night, I decided to embrace my freedom and confirmed my decision to lock my hair. Nine years later I give you Octavia's Natural Hair Care Experience. Today, I am a licensed Barber, Certified Amazon Lock stylist and Certified Sisterlock consultant.
